Professional indemnity insurance

Professional indemnity insurance covers claims from clients who say a mistake or oversight in your advice, design or service caused them a financial loss, including legal defence costs. It suits engineering and architecture firms, consultants, lawyers, accountants and IT companies in Qatar, especially when a contract asks for this cover. We request offers from several insurers licensed by Qatar Central Bank, explain the differences in limits and wording, arrange the policy and follow up any claim with the insurer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between professional indemnity and public liability?

Public liability covers injury to people or damage to their property, such as a visitor who falls in your office. Professional indemnity covers the financial loss a client suffers because of a mistake in your advice, design or service.

What does a claims-made policy mean?

Most PI policies respond to claims made while the policy is active, for work done after the retroactive date. Keeping your cover continuous, with no gaps, protects you against claims about older projects.

Does PI cover decennial liability for engineers and architects?

Article 711 of the Qatar Civil Code (Law No. 22 of 2004) holds contractors and architects jointly liable for 10 years for the total or partial collapse of buildings and fixed structures. A PI policy may cover design error claims depending on its wording, while decennial liability is often insured under a separate policy, and we can request offers for both.

What should I do if a client complains about my work?

Tell us straight away so we can notify the insurer, and do not admit liability or offer a settlement without the insurer's agreement. Most policies require prompt notice of any claim or circumstance that may lead to one.
